"Cake like my mum used to make"

On Saturday I made a cake just out the blue

My mum used to make this so I knew what to do

Chuck in some sugar, butter whisk then add some eggs

sieve in some flour, then pour out all the dregs

Into a lightly greased baking tin round or square

bake in the oven til it's just darker than fair

Whilst it's baking get your icing sugar dish

add some butter and milk mix and give a swish

then do the same in another dish without adding butter

look out a cake dish and a cake cutter

take out the cake but WAIT til its cool

or you'll take it out too early like a bloody fool

Once it's cool and you cut it in two

smother it with strawberry jam and the butter icing glue

stick the other half on top then the other icing

my mouth is watering this cake is so enticing

to finish of this lovely treat you just need a flake

crumble it on top and that's how you make

a cake just like my mums, so very yummy

my kids love when I make this the best darn mummy

This is entirely clever, KT... Like a poetic recipe. In all the time that I have been reading/reviewing poetry I have never seen anything quite like this. It is absolutely unique and superbly written. Swear I was drooling by the end and now have a horrific sweet-tooth. Am on the most strict diet on earth so this was like semi-torture for me, but at least I am still allowed to dream. Sigh... No one can make cakes quite like a mother can as it is sprinkled with an ingredient that causes eat bite to taste all the more divine and that is simply 'love'.

Thanks so much for your wonderful review you had me laughing out loud when you said you were on a diet, me too!!! haha I have no self control at all and when I need a sweet treat I go large, that's why I always fail at diets..... so true nothing quite like mums baking with that secret ingredient love - I once made this cake to take in for the school fair when I was a kid - it was in the cupboard ready to go but much to my shock my brother had cut himself a huge slab before going to work - I was raging - best wishes X

Your own mom was the one to give inspiration for this poem of cake prepaation. I enjoyed your step by step experience shared and rhymed. A cake with strawberry jam in the middle sure would be delicious. I'll bet that it would be fun to share. Thanks for this time in the kitchen with you. So fun!
