"Maya"

I remember it well that day in the sun

We'd been out with my brother having fun

Then he said to me and my sis I have a surprise

We looked at him for hidden lies

is he joking this is weird what could it be

turned out it was specifically for me

So when we get home he continued to say

There's going to be a lady there named May

She has a daughter a new friend to play

the little girls coloured I have to say

so you don't say anything out of place

I know you wouldn't it's just in case

"coloured"?  I'm so confused it's clear

I start to panick as we get ever near

What colour is she I ask in despair

I'm imagining a colour so rare

Ian says she's yellow with purple spots

I shudder to think of her covered in dots

I can hardly breathe as we get near our home

I want to run away and be on my own

but would never hurt the wee girl who waits there

no matter what colour she I wouldn't care

So we walk in the door I hear mother chatter

With May and her daughter they idolly natter

Come on Kate my brother holds the door wide

I try not to look but I see her from the side

A beautiful wee girl with black gleaming hair

and gorgeous brown skin so dark to my fair

I love her already she's so gentle and sweet

a new best friend thanks Ian best treat

We remained best friend for years and years

I can't believe I had them fears

I wonder if nothing was said

would it even have entered my head

that Maya was a different colour than me

She was like a sister, so close were we

"Maya"
KT-B,
We are learning all of our lives about everything that is part of our environment and this is true for all humanity. The thing that is amazing is that everywhere in every place we all learn uniquely for where we are. Did I just say the same thing differently in both sentences? Well, to have friends is so important and life was not meant to walk isolated. Maya sounds wonderful. I hope that we all can learn to love the unique things about one another, the different things. God created us all differently. To me humanity is a huge diamond and every race of people separate facets of a twinkling multi faceted beauty. I remember sitting on the cement steps of the grade school I attended with a little girl very different in appearance than me. I was very blond and fair skinned and she with long black wavy hair and chocolaty brown skin. I also got stung by a bee in this memory as well. I was in the first grade.Your story is really interesting as it has your family-mother and brother and Maya's mother too!
Blessings,
Kathy

Thank you, much appreciated :)
How things have changed, but this is how it was in our day. We get programmed from such a young age. So pleased you and Maya got along and became so close. The programming still goes on in different ways. Mad world we live in !
