All that glitters..."

She seems to have it all but appearances can be deceptive...

All that glitters....

The envy of the street she seems to have it all

Looking down her nose at others, making them feel small

Dressed head to toe in designer gear, kids are the same

Not worth buying or wearing if it doesn't have a name

Gets in her new Mercedes, sunglasses large on her face

A yacht in south of France, she would not be out of place

bags and bags of designer goods she brings home yet again

Bringing them in 4 at a time, in the pouring rain

No-one knows them very well, not the type to chat

Never hang around long enough to chew the fat

Very secretive they are no-one knows how they're so rich

and to the nosiest neighbours it's like trying to scratch an itch

So they watch her go about her business looking like a star

she continues to keep them at arms length they watch from afar

no-one managing despite all efforts to be her friend

she ignores them all and the messages they send

The man is even less seen, in fact rarely seen at all

Never seen playing with his kids, not out to kick a ball

Leaves the house early morning in a chauffer driven car

not home again until late, they wonder is he the star

A good looking family the neighbours all agree

they are just observers, there's things they cannot see

there's a reason why she wears glasses so large and dark

and doesn't have tea with others or walks in the park

She keeps herself to herself because she must,

the kindness of strangers she cannot trust

As her fragile world build on lies and deceit

would surely crumble at her feet

She cannot afford to have a friend

it's all to terrifying to defend

so she carries on displaying a life so fake

for herself and for her children's sake

How well do people really desire to know one another? It takes time, patience and respect and can actually be painful. I suppose there are folks that do not want to reveal themselves and aren't all of us there at times? I can think of someone whom this poem matches and a personal life must remain personal.

Thank you for your kind review, this was just a dab at something non nostaligic. I was trying to portray a woman putting on a front in a hostile marriage, not sure that came accross, however I'm glad you picked up on her feeling so alone - best wishes KT X
