A Poem by SPINNING ON that dizzy edge

I woke up this morning

with sheet marks on my face

Twisted blankets, pillows tossed

through trails of dreams could trace

Must have stretched and delved and rolled

inside this safest place.

Last night's dreams, like last night's book

weren't gently pushed aside

from bed that is a sweet escape

a hallowed place to hide.

Must have kicked and groped and spun

remembering now I cried.

It's much more than a mattress

some wooden slats and brass

Soothing like a cradle rocks

as endlesss time does pass.

Must have calmed then soothed and found

some serenity at last

How many days, how many nights

lay hidden in this space

Asking, searching, begging God

please put life into place.

                But now I wonder.....

                Like shadows fall
                Are dreams the message

                Beyond sleep's wall ...or

have I just missed the gift to read

those sheet marks on my face.

SPINNING ON that dizzy edge
Have you ever looked at your face after sleeping and wondered???

It's an oddly placed metaphor because you suggest that there is resolution. I like the concept. Does the ending feel short/sudden? Again that goes with resolution. Unless I am supposed to fall back into wonder at the end. Is my discovery that I have forgotten? And so I say,

your face has never wondered
why you carved it so worldly
it has never slumbered without
your faith in victory
it will ever remember
everything you've been
not like a book nor a dream
but with the love of reality
and your time living it

keep flowing,
Robin

Amen to that. I'm sitting in my bed as I read this piece, coffee in hand. I allow myself this ritual at the start of the day, a little bit of peace before I go about doing 'stuff'.

Does life ever get put into place? I have felt this way and looked everywhere for answers, even my dreams. You capture that exactly, the angst. I feel that with so many of your poems Kath, either we are completely in tune or you just manage to get straight to the heart of the matter, perhaps both. This piece moved me greatly.

I really liked this, it makes me wonder how the body can get itself into such shapes.... I also wonder what my face is going to look like in the morning :)

Kath - I loved this poem. You paint such a vivid description with your words that I could see the tangle of the sheets and the bed head hair. I love when a poet can take the ordinary and every day and bring it alive. I really like your "voice" and the way you write.

I love the lines:

"But now I wonder.....
Like shadows fall
Are dreams the message
Beyond sleep's wall ...or"

That was magnificent!

I love my bed which I affectionately refer to as "my nest". My safe refuge from the world.

This was amazing and I truly enjoyed it. I might have to go hop back in bed for a while, now that is great writing! lol

Ah yes, that usually happens to me when I randomly pass out on my bed. XD This was a great write, and really captures the mystery surrounding sleep & dreaming. I loved the idea of dreams passing in "endless time", because sometimes it feels like they go on forever & yet most dreams last only five minutes. o= Anyway, this was a wonderful write, great job!!!
