Gentle Lesson

Gentle Lesson

A Poem by SPINNING ON that dizzy edge

Walking always makes me think

about what's on my mind.

All bundled up against the cold

keep thinking that I'll find

a way to make some sense of this

the time it took to learn

that love that's given from the heart

won't always be returned.

I think this one paragraph sums it all up pretty nicely. there is nothing like giving all you've got from your heart, and not receiving the same in kind, be it love in the romantic sense, or love for a friend who treats you badly. we can only be responsible for ourselves, control how we treat others and our own reactions to the world around us. much as we might like , we cannot change how others treat us. great write!

Your title brought me to this poem and I'm glad I followed that instinct. Typically when we feel there is nothing more to say its because we've said all we wanted to. Of course many writers haven't learned to follow that voice and write on endlessly and repetitively until they run out of steam or energy. I am glad to read someone who is capable of succinct and perfect words that so much and leave me thinking afterwards.

No love isn't always returned, but just the same I am happy that I can love despite and inspite of that. Who knows, maybe there have been times when someone has loved me and I wasn't aware.

The walk you describe sounds like it was a good one.

Thank you for sharing it with us.

I love this one...very smart, elegant, simple, poignant. It sounds great read aloud (which I just did to make sure I was right).

This is simply beautiful...so much conveyed with so few words (and nothing left to add, i might add!). You've captured the moment with clarity. I really like this, Kath... very nice.

Simple and oh so true. I'm not much of a literary scholar so my reviews are simple and based on how your writing makes me feel.

I thought this was very beautiful just the way you left it. I am so glad this was shared with me.

Too true but we keep giving, keep risking because if we don't then neither do we grow. Why is this growth business so damn painful?

Perfectly penned poem, just rolls off the tongue.

Very well said. Sometimes a very complicated thing (such as love) can be profoundly explained with a simple though such as this one. I got to the end and just thought...wow, that says it all!

Great Job! :)
