Chapter 11

Chapter 11

A Chapter by KMC

Benett looked at him, “I…I decided to leave when you didn’t come back. I figured you had to have a good reason for not returning!”

“Benett, go back.” He said, lowering the bow. “Seriously, you don’t want to get involved.”

“Why did you leave?” he asked, sounding a bit hurt.

“Benett, you wouldn’t understand.” He said. Benett was about to respond when he heard someone.

“What is it?” Emma asked, walking down, “What got you so worked up?”

“Emir…you said she was dead!” Benett exclaimed.

“I lied.” He said, frowning at Emma. “I told you to stay put!”

“I didn’t listen.” She said, nonchalantly. “What’s he doing here?” She asked, seeing Benett.

“That is what I was trying to find out!”

            “Why did you lie!?”

            “Well, then find out!”

“Would you both shut up!?” he exclaimed. Emma and Benett stopped talking and looked at him. “Now, Benett, I lied because Caleb has been out of control lately and I disagreed with what he was doing.”

“I…he…no, Caleb is just trying to help everyone!”

“Wrong.” Emma said, “He would see everyone who hasn’t been banished dead.”

            “How do you know that!?”

“Benett, Caleb has told me on more than one occasion that he would see everyone in the city dead.”

“That cannot be true…” Benett said, forgetting the reason he was there. “He wouldn’t!”

“And you thought I was naïve.” Emma muttered. Benett frowned at her.

“I am not naïve.” He snapped. “You wouldn’t understand…you may have banished, but you never went through what we did.”

“Excuse me?” She asked, crossing her arms.

“You should have been put to death!” He snapped. “You were royalty though, so you were spared. Do you think anyone else would have been given that?”

“Benett…” Emir said. Emma said nothing, knowing what he said was true. “Why don’t you just go back to Caleb?”

“No.” He said, “I’m staying with you.”

“It isn’t safe.” Emir said, “I don’t want your death on my head.”

“I don’t plan on dying.” He said, crossing his arms. “I’m staying. You can’t make me leave.”

            “Fine.” He said, groaning. “Fine.”

“How do we know we can trust him?” Emma exclaimed, not trusting Benett.

“I know Benett, he wouldn’t betray me.” Emir said to her. Benett looked down slightly.

“So, where are you headed?” He asked.

“None of your business.” Emma snapped.

“Emma…” Emir said. “We’re going to the city walls to warn the soldiers about Caleb.”

“What makes you think they’ll listen?”

“Nothing. If they don’t though, Emma plans on sneaking in to tell her father…”

“Do you have a death wish?” Benett asked.

“No, I have a wish to protect innocent people from slaughter.” She said her arms still crossed.

“You’re going to end up dead.” He said, shaking his head.

“That’s what I told her.” Emir said.

“Thanks for the vote of confidence.” She said scathingly.  “It’s really appreciated.”

“You aren’t cut out for undercover work.” Emir said, shrugging his shoulders.

            “Then help me.”

“I already said I would, I just don’t like the idea of dying.”

“Why are you so convinced death is imminent if we do this?”

“How about the fact that sneaking into the city will be impossible, and getting into the castle? Impossible. Plus when your father sees you he’ll order your death.”

She frowned, “You don’t know that!”

            “Yes I do.”

            “How?”

“He banished you. If he really wanted to go against the law, he could have. What makes you think he won’t kill you?” He asked. She, for once, was at a loss for words.  Benett watched, listening, taking in the information he had just heard. Caleb would be pleased with this.

“So…is there anything I can do to help?” Benett asked.

“I don’t know.” Emir said, “Unless you want to join Emma on a suicide mission if the soldiers won’t listen.”

“No thanks.” He said with a shudder. “I think I’ll choose life.” Emma frowned, but didn’t say anything. She went and sat by the fire.

“Benett, I really think you should go back. If Caleb found out you were here…he’d kill you. You know he would.” Benett said nothing. If only Emir knew, knew that Caleb wanted him there.
