We Shot

We Shot

A Poem by Karen Zimmer
"

A poem about current US Race issues.

"

On your side,
Lying

Traced contours

Of your shoulders
In white lines

Where you died

Red hands up
Don't shoot!

Don’t shoot!

Black vans and clutter:

Please, don't shoot
You'd flee and he'd know better

Cameras: Don't shoot!
Shutter then a white light
Lord, please don't shoot.

Forward a white lie
We never shot

On the Bible,
We didn’t shoot

A last breath lost
Red hands and bruises

Where it was torn:

And we still don’t know

Is history

Where it's supposed to be?

Begging

Please

Don't shoot.

Cameras might rust behind bars

And they’re the only ones
Still screaming:

“But thy shot.
They f*****g shot

When they didn’t even need to.”
