DoeA Poem by Hope"You and those doe eyes, he'd say. Before he hunted. And feasted"
Wide eyed gaze
And lusty lashes "You and those doe eyes" He'd say Before he hunted And feasted In my eyes, what did he see? Shades of browns and yellows? Hues of blues and greens? The girl of all his dreams? Someone he could love? An angel from above? Or did he only see himself? A hunter on attack Hoping to fulfill some predatory promise Sensing a weakness Smirking at the breathless catch beneath But that's him Not me His own desire pooling out Into my eyes And reflecting back I am not vicious or reckless I am so anxious and helpless A doe A prey But he didn't see it that way None of them do They see game A challenge A trophy they can claim Where there is hope in my eyes They see a prize And the color of my eyes Signals go Even if my words don't They say they can read my eyes They know what I want If the eyes are the windows to the soul How do they see anything in mine? They appear so vacant now
