The War

The War

A Poem by Katie Wan

The blue eyed boys look up to the sky.

The wives look through metal fences.

The mothers look through swollen eyes.

Proud fathers look through puffed up chests.

Brothers look through hopefully stares.

Each person looking from outside.

The young man steps onto the plane.

He doesn’t know what’s coming now.

Nothing worth imagining.

A co-worker sits on the right.

A co-worker sits on the left.

Each with hopeful bright blue eyes.

Looking towards the sun lit sky.

They see once more the loving crowd

Looking at them from beyond.

They don’t know what’s coming now.

Nothing worth thinking about.

One more breath before they go.

One more breath before they fly.

One more breath their mother’s cry.

One more breath they’re off to die.
