Smokey Trenches

Smokey Trenches

A Poem by K.C. Zbryk

And as the smoke settled I found

I could open my eyes

In the dirt

Resting atop the soil

These things have no use

They have no purpose

Extra weight

Carried like stones

Weighing me down into the sand

Dragging me deeper

But if I were to pause

If I were only patient

I would find that

I could open my eyes

If I wanted to see the world around me

I could feel emotions

If I open myself to others

I can be alive

If I want to

So open your eyes

Simply see

Open yourself

Simply feel

Distance is a gift

A chance to step into the light

A chance to feel the warmth that has been missing

To breathe again

Unhindered

With no doubts or qualms

To weigh down the mind

So let the smoke settle

Unburden yourself

And breathe for a moment

You are alive

Fantastic writing, my friend. Absolutely fabulous work. This is precious wisdom and even more precious perception. There's so much light here for any reader to be led away from darkness.
