A Poem by K.C. Zbryk

Her bright eyes open

As she lets out a ragged exhale

Contrasting the jaundiced skin

So radiant so alive

She has beautiful eyes

I love those words

The ones she always says

When she sees me

But here they feel wrong

This isn’t where she should be

This isn’t her home

She shouldn’t have these bruises

Shouldn’t have the cables and chords

Shouldn’t need a button to take the edge off

But she has one and there’s nothing I can do

Some people are so strong

That it breaks your heart to see it

You never wanted to see them here

Never wanted to know what they could endure

But at times like this all I want is to be here

For her

It’s what I can do

And her breathing catches for a moment

The rattle stops for a second

And we all look

She has beautiful green eyes

I love to see them

But I hate the contrast

And she says,

“Hi hon’,”

Like nothing’s wrong

She’s just happy to see me

I’ve always loved those words

Almost as much as I love her

So I tell her the last part

Because I can’t say much at all

Because this isn’t here home

This isn’t her kitchen with her chair

Pointed so she could see who was at

Her door

This isn’t where she should be

This isn’t what she deserves

So many conversations

So many words about what to do

And we just wait for her to wake

We wait for her eyes to open again

Those green eyes

The same shared by half the room

We want to hear what she wants

Her breath catches again

Catching the attention of the room

And they open

Her son asks,

“Do you know why we are here?”

And after a moment

After a few ragged breaths, she says,

“To cut me off.”

In a matter of fact tone

No worry no fear

Just the facts

The time after this seems blank

Numb, void of anything

She won’t be here much longer

And I don’t know what to tell her

I don’t know what to say

I have no philosophy

To share on this

So I brush her white hair back

Gently kiss her head as she sleeps

And tell her that I love her

Good bye.

I don't think I have read a more beautiful expression of love in a really long time. You have a beautiful heart, my sweet, sensitive and perceptive friend. :)
