Who am I?

Who am I?

A Poem by Jyoti_Ablaze

From tackling the fluctuating Scorecards
To bidding for the best Salary Package,
I’ve let these mere numbers define me throughout my life
But is it all that I am?

Running from Monday to Friday to reach the weekend
To letting the brands decide how I live, what I consume
I’ve let this race against the clock and this evolving lifestyle define me
But is it all that I am?

From hating my own skin because I didn't look pretty enough
To letting formalism decide what and how shall I do everything
I’ve let others’ acknowledgements and approvals define my every move
But is it all that I am?

Am I not that dear child,
Who withered against the system to learn something for real?
Am I not that well-trained aspirant,
Who tried the best to fit in the criteria of corporate slavery?

Am I not that depressed millennial,
Who fought the unsung battle of compliance and obligations?
Am I not that lost soul,
Who disregarded oneself and spent a lifetime waiting to finally live?

Perhaps, in the anticipation of reaching the destination,
I mistook the purpose of this whole journey
Perhaps, this life was not about the end at all, but a chance to build one's own path
And in that pursuit to meet the true inner self.

Strange how many of us simply have no confidence or plan for life and simply get swept up in what is expected and taken in by advertising and social media. And yet we still agonise as to who we are despite going with the flow. You capture this dilemma well in this piece.

oh, that's great. sorry, i was inactive since few months so I don't reply you.
I admire the level of insight, life-awareness, knowledge and wisdom you display here.

This is an amazing poem that perfectly expresses those moments of doubts, uncertainties, discouragements, soul-searching and low self-esteem that we've all experienced at some point in our life.

'Running from Monday to Friday to reach the weekend, to letting the brands decide how I live, what I consume.'
You display what we poets are and should be about: letting our emotions and feelings echo those of others, who identify with and relate to what we're saying; though we know that, as poets, it took dedicated practice of our craft, the study and application of certain poetic devices, to reach that level of understanding and confidence in our writing, which is part of our life-journey.

Your poem is wonderful!!!

WELL DONE

Thank you so much!
Honored! :D
That was such a great piece! I could totally connect with it Jyoti as we often do fail to realize the importance of the journey than the destination.
"Perhaps, this life was not about the end at all, but a chance to build one's own path
And in that pursuit to meet the true inner self."
These were the best lines for me!
Great work :)

Thank you for your kind words Arshia!
I can feel the frust as I have gone through,
Life has crests and troughs but it goes on and on.
Nice way to squash it all in this piece.
