i met a man on the docks of a shoreline of an island far away from here

i met a man on the docks of a shoreline of an island far away from here

A Poem by Jordan Varner

i met a man on the docks of a shoreline of an island far away from here
his face was scarred and his soul shone with the color red even though his heart was blue
his eyes were dark and his crown was falling
he had a hood pulled over his head and as he looked at me
he parted his tattered lips which were more of a vessel and he said

kid in this world you've gotta do two things:
one is take care of yourself
and the other is take care of other people

bring yourself up
and on your way to the sky make sure you invite other people along

see, making sure you're at the top of the skyscrapers you build is important
but don't be selfish, make sure you bring other people

now i don't mean that you need to make a million dollars off of some idea that you think is new and exciting
i mean being the best you can be
taking care of yourself and being happy with what you've got

i would like to elaborate a bit on the latter point

make sure other people are with you

take some time out of your day to lift someone up
make them smile
tell them you like their outfit or their hair or their style or their smile or their lives
or everything about them
that's the beauty of it
by healing and lifting yourself you can lift others
that's ultimately important and oh so crucial

so remember kid
in this world you've gotta do two things:
one is take care of yourself
and the other is take care of other people
