A Poem For Poets

A Poem For Poets

A Poem by Jordan Varner

What is poetry?
Poetry is a means of getting out all that blind hatred.
Or a way to get out those dumb thoughts you have; to put them on paper.
See, I have dumb thoughts too.
What if dolphins had arms and did breaststrokes?
What if mushrooms were called Flimbles?
As i write the word Flimbles, my computer lights up, underlining it in red because it's not a word.
Well why not?
Because the dictionary says so?
Who cares? F**k the dictionary.
I am a poet.
A master crafter, word blaster, backsasser and kick-asser.
And I love myself.
Who gives a s**t if other people think you're weird?
Yell in public, be loud and obnoxious.
Wear stripes and plaid.
Show people your sixteen cats and name them all off.
Blare your political punk and flip off the world, or instead play your indie folk music and love the world.
Better yet, love yourself.
" I celebrate myself, and sing myself
And what  I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you."
Walt Whitman. Song of Myself.
Ol' Walt was right, my boys.
F****n' be yourself.
Celebrate yourself.
Sing yourself.
Be a poet in your own sense.
And don't let anyone tell you what poetry really is.
