THE ENDINGS ARE THE WORST

THE ENDINGS ARE THE WORST

A Poem by Julie Dant

The Endings Are the Worst

“Silence is hovering above the Atlantic.”

he tells her.

“Hush...hush darling!” he tries to

calm her.

 The endings

are the worst.

She hates their conversations

to end.

The entire time she is typing

feverishly,

she is awaiting his decision to end it.

Dreading

that silence…that leaves empty,

hollow depressions upon her raw and

open soul

She’s secure in the knowledge

that he and loves her

and only her.

 How does she know?

Who knows how?…she just knows.

She wonders how he can be

so strong…

where his strength comes from.

She keeps asking him

questions,

just so he’ll have to answer….

to write just one more line.

“Tell me you love me again!”

she demands.

“You cannot say it enough to me.

Am I in your head during the day?”

She asks.

Another question…another answer

until…

“Silence is hovering over the Atlantic.”

he tells her

as gently as he can…to prepare her for

the end.

She protests. She cries. She begs.

She types….

and types and types..hoping for

just one more line

from him.

It comes…

“Hush…hush darling!” he tries to

calm her,

but, the endings are the worst.
