The Past Can Be Foggy For A Girl That Never Checks Her Rearview Mirror

The Past Can Be Foggy For A Girl That Never Checks Her Rearview Mirror

A Poem by MsJewel
"

~ heartprints ~

"

I drove all night and arrived at yesterday

or perhaps it was the day before…

the past can be foggy for a girl that never checks her rearview mirror

Still, this is a chance to rewrite my story,

on this trip I must take

or to see what could have been

this stubborn part of me that refuses to  accept defeat

I can feel him here

 a phantom

           drifting

 between the whisper of leaves

 in the morning breeze

or is it my heart trembling…

He was free in his wildness

like a drop of fresh water

flowing, often overflowing

knowing no boundaries,

no borders, no rules

Yes, free

             and powerful

so powerful, that I didn’t have to be anything…

                                                       but his girl

The sun is warm on my face

reminiscent of his soft breath on my cheek

the linger of his touch

the ache deep within that longs for him

                               again and again

Yes, I know he is here

and we’ve tried this so many times before…

He favored hot cars (and drove to fast I may add)

It impressed women, it impressed me

Until I bought my own hot car

I know I should turn around

fly away, top down, tires screaming

no butterfly wings or pretty prose

just the wind

               teasing my hair

                        taking my breath

                            erasing his memory

But I fear I’ll never find a road that doesn’t lead me back to him

So, at least for today

              I’ll stay

                       soak up yesterday’s sun

                                             my heart on the run

Yes, the past can be foggy for a girl that never checks her rearview mirror

I love this piece Julie! The spirit that speaks through it is one I like by for! I have friends with it! My grandma had it! The fun loving girl that enjoys being controlled for a moment but needs to be in control herself. The memory reluctantly runs back too that made her feel so alive then when reflecting she says "until I bought my own hot car"
She doesn't need him. She made her own way...she is the exciting one...Not him! She only craves him because he is more reckless than her.
Love how she does look back tho. Sometimes I wonder about my friends like this if they ever look back. I envy this spirit of freedom...this drive to move on and have fun! Like she says early on..."refuses to accept defeat"
I love everything about this piece! Well written!

I totally enjoyed taking this drive with you! You are a great weaver of positive emotion. (There's a 'to' in there that needs another 'o') I didn't look real close for errors. I was having too much fun! And that's how poetry should be! Thanks for the request :) I.I.

had a thelma louise feel without the tragic ending lol.
Your poem was lively and spoke to me as if I were in the company of this young lady.
Your writing flowed effortlessly, letting me comprehend the trials of this woman seeking the excitement and attention of her rebel man.
Julie you are very talented in revealing the emotions of your characters caught in the spheres of romance.

this made me think of St. Paul, 'I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.' however, we always return to our first loves. this has a great analogy and i like the cleverness of it. has a carefree, daring feel to it but still has your elegant, romantic underpinnings. all in all a very enjoyable write for sure.

Thank you for your kind words Paul :) Julie
yes, but your road is one to security about yourself...the speaker has him envying her ride...

love the metaphor in this one...especially the driving all night to yesterday part.
reminds me a bit of celine dion's "i drove all night"
nicely done, Julie..

Thank you for your lovely comment Jacob. I appreciate you and your friendship :) Julie
I find I love your titles. Why I ask myself? Because they lead to a treasure trove of fine romantic writing. But with this one there is a sharpened edge. I like the dichotomy here also. Excellent work.

You have always had this edge to your work
i admire the strength that comes through your words
making women believe in their internal strength
a man can be an overwhelming force of love
but can dip too much into a woman's soul

i admire this piece
perfect timing
