The Snowman

The Snowman

A Poem by MsJewel

~~~~
When the snowfall, soft and gentle
floats from heaven feather light
over valleys over hilltops
graceful in its tender flight,
landing softly, tiny snowflakes
form blankets of purest white
Woolen mittens catching snowflakes
and a bit of winter storm,
blending with imagination
the snowman slowly takes form,
as we watch from foggy windows
in our homes toasty and warm
Winter air is cold and chilly
with a bite, December frost
sends a shiver to the snowman
eyes of coal and smile embossed
in the snowfall, though it’s loving
still he seems alone and lost
In his world filled with icicles
heartwarming his vision stands
Yet look closely at the snowman
with no one to hold a hand
made of branches, a tree bare as
 his icy white wonderland
Can he hear the choirs singing
of a joyous holiday
or the sleigh bells gently ringing
as the children run and play?
Does he know that it is Christmas
and the New Year’s on its way?
Perhaps he fears for the springtime
when the sun brilliant and bright
warms the shadows on his blanket
covered in cool winter white
and his only gift this Christmas
is the snowfall, feather light
Red and green bows dress our doorsteps
as our holiday dreams of
mama’s fruitcake, friends and family
fill our hearts with warmth and love,
while the snowman in his white world
catches snowflakes from above
So wintry, yet so warm. Once again, your talent for poetry shines through every word. I loved how this poem encapsulates the creation of something inanimate, yet makes it seem as if it has life. Wonderful job!
One little suggestion:
I think the last line of stanza 5 should be: and that New Year's on its way.
you trying to make me blush? ~L~ you are welcome Julie :)
Awww...I love how you brought the image of Christmas essentially through the eyes of the snowman. "Can her hear the choirs singing of joyous holiday or the sleigh bells gently ringing as the children run and play?" What an adorable two lines. You made me sad for him in a way as well, even if he is just a snowman. Great job!
i love this...it reminds me of christmas when i was a kid...when it still had the meaning it should...when the season felt warm, despite how cold it was outside.
Thank you Jacob! Wishing you a warm and wonderful Holiday Season! :) Julie
Your poem makes me want to go outside and hug all the snowmen I see (though I'd get a chill, and he might melt a bit...) Beautiful winter images and wonderful rhyme make this a seasonal delight!
Thank you Scott. Happy Holidays! :) Julie
Your words danced across the page like tiny snowflakes...I stood ready and waiting...hoping to catch one on my nose or tongue.
Lovely poem as always jewel. We're a little short on snow around these parts. I'm gonna have to make a sand man instead,
I live in California on the beach - so we don't have snow either. A sandman works for me! :) Julie
