Culture-ShockA Poem by Julianna Marie
I watched the Chinese man walking his dog
on one stick, and I watched the Chinese man walking his dog on four legs, Asking me if my lips were painted red because the Forbidden City claimed it would bring 'Good Luck and Happiness,' and I said "No, but let's Paint the Town Red!" Let's buy paintbrushes and subscriptions to superstitions, Let's do anything to take our minds off of the Pacific Ocean-- Being both Phoenix and Dragon, painting with pear-scented passion: on fire. and I said "Put THAT in your fortune cookie!" And he dragged himself by handshakes only, screaming "VEGETARIANS DON'T EXIST IN CHINA, WHERE ARE MY LEGS?" to anyone without sparklers starving for red, white, and s**t-eating blue bonzai-grown straight from their freedom-fried fertilized eye sockets. We were Rorschach rarities and they all wanted our photos-- All they asked was that our hair was lighter than the limbless skeletons we packed in the bags beneath our eyes as we said "Carry-on, please." ...Carry on, We try to. (There is nothing easy about this.) Our eyes are open, That was all any of them wanted.
