Birds of a Feather

Birds of a Feather

A Poem by Julianna Marie

Without you to push me into the shadows,
I don't know where to stand.
Without you,
this whole world has turned to shadows.
Descended from the same feather,
we broke away,
and we flew
...but we never forget.
I look down at my wings,
and miss the breeze from your lead against them.
I look down at my wings
and they're in the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle--
mangled and tangled
and broken.
From an egg to the sky
in the blink of an eye--
we've always flown together
in our perfect 'V.'
But it'd only be a matter of time
before we broke away,
and we flew.
The comfort of the nest
versus the heat of the quest--
birds of a feather
but when the feather turns to wings,
the choices become endless.
Amongst the clouds,
you'd never be able to tell us from one another--
birds of a feather.
The same swift grace,
the same simple beauty
and an overwhelming desire
to be alone.
When always flying in formation,
you lose yourself.
When always flying in formation,
you lost me--
or pushed me away
so far into the shadows,
they've swallowed me whole.
With only jigsaw wings to carry myself out,
I could use your strength yet again.
Birds of a feather, birds of a feather.
