Now It's Your Turn

Now It's Your Turn

A Poem by Julian Lorenzana

           Now It’s Your Turn

Now that we’re old, we’re just like little babies.

We cannot do some things that we could do when young.

We recall that years ago, you had these same problems.

Your legs didn’t seem to work and you couldn’t eat by yourselves,

But you never worried because you had lots of help.

We put you in our arms and took you here and there.

And when you got real hungry, we served you baby food.

And with a little spoon, we put it in your mouth

Once a little older, you didn’t need us as much.

When we served you your food, you ate it by yourselves.

And when the need arrived for you to empty yourselves,

We were always ready to wash your soiled diapers.

And when a little older, we’d take you to the bathroom.

There, you always took care of your needs by yourselves.

When babies, you got sick and to doctors we took you,

Or home remedies we would always provide you with.

Our roles have changed and now we are like two new babies

God has now taken away all those youthful abilities.

That’s why we need for you to lend us your assistance.

We cannot walk too well and we cannot think clearly.

Our legs will not obey messages from our brains,

As the messages it sends, on their way get lost.

Our eyes, legs and hands are unable to decipher them.

Our speech is all garbled and we have lost our hearing,

So now it’s your turn to take us here and there.

You must speak to us louder and listen more attentively.

We soon will disappear and no more we will bother you.

You will not have to worry, for you will not be burdened,

With taking us to there or bringing us right back.

You will not have to shout so we can understand,

Nor pay real close attention to understand our speech.

But don’t leave us alone while we are still around,

Even if we’re senile and everything is wrong.

Maybe it is your work, or maybe it’s the distance,

Or perhaps your families don’t allow you to visit us.

We can’t believe it’s lack of love or lack of interest,

That keeps you all away and makes you not to care.

We don’t know what it is, but we’ll leave it all to God!

How sad that some children ignore their aging parents. You are so right...we did it all for them and now they should be doing things for us. I took care of my mom for the last 5 years of her life and I will never regret that. Unfortunately senior citizens do not get the respect they so richly deserve. Sad thoughts here, but ones that need to be said. Lydi**

/We soon will disappear and no more we will bother you.
You will not have to worry, for you will not be burdened,/

Such a sad reflection on how elders and parents are made to feel they are a burden, when they have contributed so much.
