Long Age Wears and Tears

Long Age Wears and Tears

A Poem by Julian Lorenzana

Long Age Wears and Tears

Real skills I really didn’t have many

But I must say that I had a few

It‘s better than not having any

Because then you have nothing to do

We all sooner or later find out

That long age brings wears, tears and some more

And that we simply can’t live without

All those great things we could do before

I could walk, run, jump and even dance

Obstacles were to me really unknown

I always used them at every chance

And doing them well I always have shown

My lovemaking my wife really enjoyed

When I sang she was quite overjoyed

Now those same skills I try to avoid

Because they seem to get her annoyed

One of those skills has just disappeared

‘Cause she can’t concentrate anymore

Away from those same acts we have steered

Because she thinks they are just a bore

Now my singing’s in hibernation

Because now to nobody I can sing

There’s no end to my deep frustration

And I’m sure I can’t do anything

As far as basketball and dancing

I do not anymore try to attempt

When at people doing them I’m glancing

For those people I feel great contempt

Though in my writing and my singing

My caregiving has greatly interfered

With those skills I will keep on swinging

Now that those others have disappeared

When you reach a definitive age

Many things really accumulate

Gray hair and wrinkles become the rage

Aches and pains come with many birthdates

Then we find out we no more can do

The things we could do so long ago

And then we begin to realize, too

That some more of our skills will soon go

You have the skill of celebrating life's ups and downs in your poetry and even if skills go, the greatest skill is to live long and prosper as Mr.Spock would say. Very poignant poem - thanks for sharing it.
