Poetry Amateur

A Poem by Julian Lorenzana

Amateur poet greeting people

                         Amateur Poet

I’m an amateur and I do not have an inkling

As to what poem writing is really about.

But deep in my mind I can’t but keep on thinking,

That I’ll do it, no matter what will come out.

I assure you, what I write will be quite simple,

And I know that the reader will criticize.

He will smile and that way will show a dimple,

Thinking that, for sale, my poems will have no price.

It’s okay because they are not up for sale.

I just want the reader to know what I feel.

If I planned to sell them, I know I would fail.

And taking money for them would be a steal.

So just read them for the sake of simply reading,

And I promise that someday good poems I’ll write.

But I hope that many readers will be seething,

With desire to read my poems day and night.

I had better start on that important trek,

So, for now, my good-byes to all I will send.

I pray that on my way I will have no wreck,

So that idle a long time I will not spend.

Many of my poems in English will be written.

Many others in Spanish I will engage.

Some readers will with the English bug be bitten,

While others in Spanish will read page by page.
