The Diver

The Diver

A Poem by Alex Borst
"

Song Lyrics

"
One last kiss before I dive down
Into the dark beneath the waves
We embrace in shaking silence
For the horrors I will face

Out here the seas are raging
But the worst is down below
Keep steady when you release me
I’m your arrow, you’re my bow

When I come back i'll bring treasure
You can pluck it from my wounds
Spread it out upon the table
In a red-silk-curtained room

I'll return with gold and silver
Though you and I both know the truth
By the time I reach the surface
We'll be too grey to give it use

So I sank into the darkness
Like no world I'd ever seen
Good and evil in the shadows
Of the deepest blues and greens

When I came upon the Kraken
His eyes thundered through the brine
Lightening screamed electric anger
In a voice that's just like mine

I fumbled for my spear gun
And he laughed into my face
He said "Surrender to the darkness,
Spare yourself from the disgrace"

As we fought the waters filled with blood
The moons both rose and set
He had me pinned against the coral
I had him trapped inside my net

And with net in hand I surfaced
Although I'd already known
While I was gone, your wings healed
And you'd already flown

So I did not kill the Kraken
Who's become my closest friend
But I keep my spear gun ready
For some day that must end

I keep the monster in my basement
In the lighthouse where I sleep
For you the light is searching
For you the light I keep

The writing itself is great and the rhymes are fitting. I especially like the second verse which could even work as a standalone poem. I can't help but feeling is a bit too long and this is because the story itself confused me the first time I read it as I thought it had conflicting messages, but I realized this was just misinterpretation on my behalf. While most of the verses keep the story progressing, some only describe the fighting itself without adding much to it.
