My Shadow

My Shadow

A Poem by Joycelyn Annette

My dark companion
Slender legs and vacant eyes
Plastered upon a dirty pavement grave
The sun’s offspring is a fair-weather friend
Timid and blank,
Standing behind my fleshy form,
Sometimes a leader,
But rarely beside
Disappears in my darkness,
Fleeing from the concrete
Only protected by daylight and presence
Too weak to tread the path alone
Weightless steps make no impression
On my tangible world
Nothing but a fickle fog
Absent through my storms
