Terminal

Terminal

A Poem by Solidad

Vital life sources blister
Shutting down
Victimizing my armature
Splintering the bone
Maiming the muscle
In an attempt to break
The spirit

Scorching the earth
White blood cells
Lost to friendly fire
Found in the gutters
Of my liver

Blackening
The collateral damage
Visually alarming
My hair began to jump ship
Possibly returning in the spring
But for now
My scalp lay baron

Glass irises
Encased in dark abysses
Thoughts won't synapse
Properly
Or at all
Kin come to hold vigils
At my bed side
Painting vivid images of hope
For their own security

I scrutinize the battle won
But the war lost
Exhaling with tumultuous force
Capping my eyes with rest
The exhaustion permeates
From my pores

I never knew prayer
until now
And after this last breath
I may never know it again.
