Chapter THREE

Since we moved to our plot, I had to cope with a few drastic changes in my life over the years. My family moved to Cape Town when I was eight years old. We lived there for nine months, in Blueburg beach. This is a coastal community close to Cape Town itself, but a 1600 km drive from Pretoria. This change took quite a while to get used to, since almost everything there is different, it’s almost like moving to a new country. The climate changes dramatically - you can have four seasons in one day there. The people are also very different. Since we were homeschooling we didn’t have many friends, but me and my sisters were all we needed, building houses with pillows and mattresses, playing office, rehearsing shows etc. We did everything to keep ourselves busy when the weather was cold and rainy.I don’t recall much from my Cape Town life, but there are a few experiences that stand out and are embedded in my memory. Like the time we were saved by the heroic ice-cream man from being dragged into the vast ocean by the violent currents, and helplessly drowning. And the times we played hide and seek on the humungous sand dunes of Hout Bay. And all the adventurous and daring expeditions I went on, in search of another ‘Golzath’ valcano, somewhere in the sandy hills and ‘bouldery’ beaches of Llandudno. Nevertheless I don’t remember much from those ancient days other than these unforgettable experiences and a lot of walking. Since we weren’t very technologically advanced to be equipped with the simple transport means known as an automobile, we had to walk everywhere. We walked to the library, friends’ houses, shops, malls, and one particularly unforgettable trip where my mom made the scarce exception of sticking us for a movie. And that is the notorious day where I watched my very first movie, and how amazing it was, the experience, the sensation, the amazement of Dude where’s my Car.

To this day I only remember fractions of memories about our stay in Blueburg, which jump up into my mind at some unexpected point whilst cutting my toast. After about seven months my dad got a job on another project in Hout Bay, which was close to Cape Town, and about a 40 minute drive from Blueburg. We lived there for another nine months, of which I remember very little. I have a surprisingly bad memory for insignificant long term events. Thus we can jump back to where we’re living in Pretoria again. I think the biggest event that I can remember, upon returning from Cape Town, was the very insignificant acquaintance with a very interesting person known as Frikenstein, or more formally, Frikkie Nel. He was the very fortunate brother of my music teacher, and by fortunate, you shall soon know why.

After Frikkie and I met, neither of us liked each other much, and we were both a bit annoyed by one another. I was a bit of a show off, and I thought I could wrestle down anyone remotely cheekier than me. And I thought he was just quite frankly intimidating and very deep, knowing which spots in my personality to twist and turn to make me as uncomfortable as possible. And that is probably why, today, we are best friends in the universe. He has someone to twist and turn, and I have someone to keep me under control. And we still don’t really like each other, but we try to ignore that fact most of the time, since it is not the most significant aspect to be present in the best friendship ever. Since then, after about a month, we kind of started hanging out more, and I did see him about three times a week, since I had music lesson at his house. My mom would stop by when we are in town another day, and we stay over at one another’s house on weekends. So we pretty much lived together. He is very fortunate to have me, because no one else can handle his, quite literally, super coolness, or his quite extreme intimidation, which over the years I have learned to effectively avoid. Most of the time... I think. Or he has devised some master plan where he keeps me under constant hypnotization (which, in this case is very possible!) But even if so, I am entirely content because he is handling it very well, and so far I have not realised or been depressed or emotional etc.

Over the years we have met a quite a few very interesting characters. One of these is a guy who managed to get stuck in some kind of uncontrollable extrovert speech and vocal continuum. He is constantly talking, and when he runs out of things to talk about, he still keeps on talking, except this time its just nonsense. And he is also very energetic and would get up to the weirdest of things, such as admire his manly muscles, which in this case was nothing to necessarily admire, in the mirror on Frikkie’s cupboard. But nevertheless Frikkie and i had the most genuine fun and memories with friends like these.

Since we never really enjoyed ourselves around dull and boring people, who in this case happened to be almost every average school dude, obsessed with his style, pathetic clothes, and ‘emo’ characteristics. These kinds of people just put us off, and we joked about their pathetic immature behaviour and the things that occupied their being in this world. Thus we were left with crazy people and the more interesting personalities that happened to suit us quite well, but usually it ended up just being me and him chilling, and messing about. Since our friendship began, we did things neither of us, nor you, would have ever imagined is possible. We went crazy, and lived life to the full, and we still are. But now its time to end the chapter, and soon you shall read about all the excitement and adventure that has enriched our friendship, so far.
