Chapter One - And Then There Were Three

Chapter One - And Then There Were Three

A Chapter by JosephineJones

Every myth and legend has some truth to it, every god and monster exists in a dark place you wouldn't want to know about, but these stories are only shared to hide the horrid truth; humans are the worst monsters.

They kill their own species over the stupidity of land, race, and religion. Humans share stories of vampires and werewolves, not just for entertainment, but to try convince themselves they're not the worst thing out there. There are dark things out there, made to destroy everything, some have slipped past dimensional barriers into the world of humans.

What is the first thing a human will do when it discovers this new thing? Kill it, maybe write about it in a book. As soon as fantasy became popular, human wrote about demon hunters, vampire slayers, and ghost busters. Humans like to create things, in a way, that is what makes them so bad. While monsters stick to their usual pattern, humans make new ways of destruction, guns, bombs, grenades, missiles, swords, daggers, any way to make killing easier.

But this story isn't about demons, ghosts, or vampire. This is about a new species; Mutants. You might want to know what makes this species so bad.

They were made by humans.

I threw my notebook to the ground and collapsed onto the bed. "I can't do this anymore!"

Nora looked up from her homework with a raised eyebrow. "Leah, we've been working for ten minutes."

"But I don't want to do anymore, I'm too tired."

Nora adjusted her glasses in the classic 'nerdy' way and sighed. "In ten minutes, all you've done is written the date. You've hardly overworked yourself."

I put my hands on my hips and pouted. "And the title."

Nora gave a small sigh and put down her work to look at the blonde currently lying on her bed, I took her silence as an excuse to continue. "And anyway, biology is sooooo boring."

Nora rolled her eyes "We're doing chemistry." She said, absentmindedly tapping her pen against her wooden desk.

"It's still science, what's the difference?"

Nora lay her head on the desk. "Why am I even friends with you?"

I stood up on Nora's double bed and struck a pose with one hand on my hip the other behind my head. "Because I'm so damn sexy."

Nora gave her a strange look before bursting out laughing. "Oh, just go to Jake already."

"What? I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Oh please! I know you have been texting him for the last ten minutes. Just go, I'll finish your homework."-Before adding-"Again." Nora pushed a strand of brown hair behind her ears and turned her desk chair back around to continue her work.

I jumped off the bed with a leap and grabbed my white woolen coat. "Thank you! You're the best!" I said, rushing out the door slamming it behind me.

=====+=====+=====+=====

I kicked my foot through a pile of autumn leaves, a flurry of red, orange and yellow colours flew up in the air and were blown away by a chilly breeze. I thought about Nora and what she had said earlier, about wondering how they were even friends.

We really proved the theory that opposites attract. Nora's favourite subject was chemistry and mine was well, lunch. Us two always went to Nora's house for studying, as she had some of the best information available in her books, whereas my collection of literature on the other hand came to a total number of zero. Unless you counted magazines as literature, that is. We even looked different. Nora's hair was a straight and brunette, I had bouncy blonde curls. Nora's eyes were a light hazel, mine were a bright shade of blue, the list of opposites went on; Nora had glasses, never wore makeup and had science posters and books filling every possible nook and cranny of her room. I had perfect eyesight, half my weight was compiled of makeup and I had pictures of celebrities and friends everywhere in my room. The list of differences could go on and on.

I walked along the woods, my hair bouncing as I walked and stopped in front of a large oak tree. "Hey." Said a voice above my head. Looking up, I saw Jake sitting on the small sofa in our tree house.

We made it last summer and spent most days there. We sit there and read, him comics, me magazines, but most often we talk about whatever's on our mind, his soothing voice is just a constant comfort, you could listen to it as you do music. Nora would often join us, but today being a weekday, she was probably studying for the upcoming leaving cert, even though we had only just started sixth year.

He put down his comic, which had a red and gold robot on the front, of course I had no idea who it was, but Jake was so obsessed with comics he could probably tell me his entire backstory.

"Are you coming up?" I looked at the rope ladder hanging down in front of me, but decided otherwise. I grabbed the branch above my head and in a few swift moves, I was at the level he was. He looked back down at the comic.

"Show off." He muttered.

I laughed slightly. "And hello to you too."

I sat down on the dusty, brown couch and moved close to Jake. After a few moments of awkward silence between the two of us, we both spoke at the same time. "I wanted to talk to you-"

I looked at him. "You first."

He took a moment to compel himself. "I found... something."

I gave him a confused look "Something?"

"Yeah, I was exploring the forest, and well... I found a door."

I laughed at him "Oh, nice one Jake. That's good. A door, in the forest."

I continued to laugh for a bit, but realised he wasn't laughing with me. "You're well and truly serious?"

I didn't believe it for a bit, but the look on his face. It was like, he believed it himself. He grabbed my hand "Just come with me."

This is a really good start. I especially liked the line at the beginning "humans are the worst monsters". Very powerful and true. Keep up the good work.
