Where’s the girl?

Where’s the girl?

A Poem by Joe Palmer

Where’s the girl?

Where is the girl who I love so dearly?

The one with whom I’ve danced, sang, laughed and cried,

Who would hold my hand and be by my side.

Surely she’s there, She’s still there clearly.

Where is the girl who would bring me Chinese?

The girl who I fell for, changed for and would die for,

Who has slept on my bed, together, cuddled on the floor,

She’s still there, maybe just down on her knees.

For what she cannot see is how love changes,

Like a pack of cards it shuffles, rearranges.

It does not grow stale. Suffer, weaken, or eventually fail.

It merely changes.  It goes through stages.

And my darling, it seems you’re looking for an excuse to jump overboard,

But this ships not sinking, it’s just changing course,

So like Rose from Titanic, please step down from the rails.

Come back to bed, and if all else fails,

We can go back to sleep.

This title stuck out to me for some reason after reviewing your other poem. I just had to read it and I am glad I did. It almost reminds me of myself. I can picture and even hear a particular someone saying some of the exact same things that you wrote above, almost...
When I read it to myself, while being introspective at the same time, it makes me kind of sad... Things are always different from every individual point of view but it isn't always positive for everyone involved. It makes me want to sit back and think a lot more about what I have just read.
The ending was beautiful. Simple, perfect, and comforting...
"Come back to bed, and if all else fails,
we can go back to sleep."
I think that was just the right touch to this poem. I went from feeling a bit sad, empathetic, and almost got lost in thought/memories. The last line, though, pulled my head back above the water and let me breath comfortably again.
The simple things in life are some of the most enjoyable. After a while, some of those things aren't even acknowledged as 'simple' anymore. Those 'simple' things can wind up meaning so much to you and without those things it can feel as if there is a void that can't be filled. Then all you want anymore are those 'simple' things, like laying in bed together to sleep, and it's terribly painful when they're gone.

I think she is there... you have a grasp on the girl, she will come back...
If she knows your heart as you know hers, then love will come full circle. (I truly believe that)

You have an innate capacity for expressing your emotions ...well done!~xoxo~:)

Joe, I really like this poem--especially the straight truth in it. Yeah, the last two lines are the best, and wrap it all up.
The intensity of feeling is there, but you make it all real by your easy, offhand, convincing treatment.
I'm going to check out your music. I played guitar in a band once. We had some commercial success, but I slid off into other things.

Love changes and goes through stages. I love this, it reads as though things might change but don't let go, ride it out. Love me for me- I'm still the same person but maybe onto different things. Very nice.

I can tell you are a musician by the beautiful flow of your words. I love romantic poetry and this has such a sweetness about it - yes, relationships change and evolve but love is still there...

and if all else fails, we can go back to sleep - my favorite line. Absolutely heartwarming!

Yes, sleep heals all wounds amd can get you over some real rough spots. Hope she decides to stay, Joe. You obviously care a lot about her and that is not something to be taken lightly. You have written a very moving, heart-felt poem. Keep writing!
