A Poem by Joe Palmer
"

For you <3

"
The other day, on Writers Cafe,
this woman wrote to me...
that 'unfortunately it would not be possible,
to review my poetry'.
She 'Hoped that I would understand,'
and 'Sincerest apologies.'

Was she was besieged by work,
and couldn't find the time?
Did she have commitments to other things?
'Coz frankly that would be fine.
No, the problem, simply put,
was the fact my poems rhymed.

I appreciate art takes many forms,
many of which I'm not so keen.
I'd feel under-qualified to analyse,
but the fact remains to be seen...
To avoid because of the rhyming structure,
Well that seems a little mean!

I find it hard to comprehend that
a woman approaching seventy-three.
A woman so wise and educated,
didn't have the mental capacity.
To spend just thirty seconds of precious time,
because the rhyming couplets were A-B, A-B.

Now I'm not bitter or devastated,
maybe just a little perplexed.
To see such undeniable prejudice,
regarding the style of ones text.
So if you were expecting me to review YOUR work,
I'm afraid you won't be next.

Don't worry. Said person won't know I'm writing about her, she doesn't review rhyming poems.

This
is
HILARIOUS!!
Actually, I'm more partial to poetry that rhymes, and has a rhythm to it. Although I have read some really good "free verse"...
What I'm not partial to is snobby old ladies who think that they have the last word in literary genius.
Hun, you're better off without her...

Yeah just like everyone else is saying I have never heard someone say they won't read something because it rhymes? That is a new one on me.. Other than that this piece is pretty much to the point and packs a punch... lol

But you nailed it on the head with saying that poetry takes many forms. There are a wide range of styles, and sometimes the best poets can't even write the simplest type... Good work...

OK that's a new one... I've heard of not reviewing free verse....not reviewing books...not reviewing story's...not reviewing any poems... Etc.. But never not reviewing because it rhymes. In any case I do believe each writer can designate restrictions on what they review but in turn they shouldn't then expect you to review them. And honestly if the friendship isn't reciprocal why even have them as a friend. :-)

snobbery at it finest just because a poem rhymes does not mean you should dismiss it a lot of people love to read a rhyming poem and in fact it is harder for some people to rhyme so maybe shes jealous of your ability to . I enjoyed this fellow rhymer

What a witty reply!! And I love the author's note. LOL

A true talent in all forms in my opinion. You are right, there are so many types of poetry and for me the ones that rhyme are a more enjoyable read, they just bounce you along. I personally don't do RR's but never mind if someone sends me something for review, if it goes over my head I'm just happy to have read their work. I don't worry so much about "tit for tat", if you review me that's great but if not I'm good with that too. I'm not everyone's cup of tea. I think for this person to expect you to read their work after that message is a little unfair and one sided. Happy that you got a fun poem out of it.
