Another Man's Stare

Another Man's Stare

A Poem by Joseh

You were everything to me, everything

But you were asking for more than I was giving

I was always here, you were always there

And then one day I got lost in another man’s stare

He gave me the smiles that I needed

The kinds that make you melt in a puddle of warmth

He gave me the medicine that I needed

The kind that makes your stomach hurt in a quivering, uncontrolled roar

I tried to resist the need to feel loved

But those three words coming out of your mouth

They couldn’t compare to the same three words showing up through actions

With him, there was no doubt

He gave me the warmth that I needed

The kind accompanied by the soft pressure of a touch

He gave me the security that I needed

The kind that spelled out “I’m here now.”

Last summer was everything, but it’s fading away

But that doesn’t mean that I won’t think of you

When I hear our song on the radio

I’ll smile

You gave me the strength that I needed

The kind that let me pick myself up

You gave me a shoulder to cry on

But it wasn’t enough

You were everything to me, everything

But you were asking for more than I was giving

I was always here, you were always there

And then one day I found myself in another man’s stare
