Why do you want to be Teacher?

Why do you want to be Teacher?

A Poem by Hell in a Hip Flask

Why do you want to be a teacher?

Well I think education is really important

and I feel I have the skills to really

help release the potential of

the kids in your school.

Why do you want to be a teacher?

I really want to help kids in school

make the right choices, you know

I didn’t get that when I was young

and I would’ve loved

someone to steer me right.

Why do you want to be a teacher?

I’ve always loved English and I feel

like teaching is just the best way

for me to carry on loving it,

as I can share that love.

Why do you want to be a teacher?

Well I don’t just want to be a teacher.

I’m actually a writer as well but I

feel the teaching really

helps inspire me,

you know I’m writing a

book right now actually

Why do you want to be a teacher?

Of course I’m still dedicated

to the teaching, it’s

actually why I paired

my degree with

the Education minor.

It gave some great

hands on experience

and you know I feel it

makes my CV more well-rounded and"

Why do you want to be a teacher?

Well free-lance writing is hard to

get into, you know there’s

a lot of competition and

it can be hard to get noticed

but I really think teaching’s gonna

get me back on track so I can"

Why do you want to be a teacher?

Look this is temporary and

hey at least I’m doing something

here, more than words

on a page can do,

you know this is real.

Why do you want to be"

This isn’t all I’m gonna be,

alright, the book will happen

I’ll make it happen, a

few years is all it’s gonna

take and I’ll be ready again,

I just need the time okay?

Why do"

F**k!"I’m scared,

I just need to know

I’ll be safe alright?

I need to know I’ll

do something, I just,

I just can’t take the risk.

I think you chart here the evolution of teaching. In Ireland it was always looked upon as a blessing to have either a priest or a teacher in the family. it bestowed a modicum of middle-class respectability in some people's eye - their eyes were quite shallow.
Now teaching as you rightly point out, is more likely to be a stepping stone to something considered more noble.
This is sardonic and sad I felt - a modern day tragi-comedy.
I did see where it was going but it didn't spoil the journey one bit my friend.

This poem is funny and sharp. The writer expresses his own turmoil in knowing what he wants to be, but at the same time being pestered by the same question of 'why' and in the end he loses his confidence in doing what he feels comfortable and capable anymore.
