Just Some Thoughts On Love..

I was thinking back to one of my favorite movies, Stardust.. Yvaine, the heroine of the movie, stated that love can be mistaken for loathing sometimes.. And I believe I know why.

 

We often mistake love for loathing because love frightens us. Love takes courage whereas hate is the easy way out.  Love involves giving yourself fully to another person and serving them.. Not in a submissive sense but in a sense of where you take care of them because you love them- you put their needs above yours. Love isn't just about butterflies and roses- it is about commitment and sacrifice.  When you love someone, you are committed to them.. They have your heart, and you would do anything for them; at least, I would.

 

In humans, it goes against our nature to look out for another person- to not put ourselves first. We are selfish creatures; however, we have this amazing capacity to love, and we can love so deeply and so fiercely, that it can be all consuming.  In this, when we love someone, we go against our very natures to care for that person and to make sure they are happy above our own happiness- we give them everything, every part of us, until both are consumed and you cannot tell where one ends and the other begins. 

 

And this is why love is easily mistaken for loathing- loathing/hating is easy.. but loving.. is hard, and it takes a lot of courage to put yourself on the line for one person, because they then have the power to build you up or to make you fall.
