This Ain't No Ordinary

This Ain't No Ordinary

A Poem by Not A Writer
"

Discover a simple truth that might change the way you look at life.

"

Day to day we think we're living ordinary lives,

And I’ve been thinking, “What if this is all one big lie.”

We run and prove like we’re part of something greater

While this dream of ours grows all the more faker.

So I may not be on television neither you too;

Nor have I written a book out of the blue.

So, I often ask, “What’s the point of my life?”

Heck, I live in Upper Michigan; I think I’d rather die.

Yet every day, let me teach you two truthful truths:

One, we’re making a statement of ourselves in whatever we do.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a president, politician or police;

You have a chance to live your life and find your soul’s release.

I know you feel trapped and imprisoned by bars,

Feeling like the dealer dealt you a bad hand of cards.

But, I’m finding you can take any circumstance by your control

You don’t have to be held back; it’s the matter of just letting go.

Another truth and the last at that:

Two, life should be the act of reaching beyond ourselves.

Wealth, fame, or pleasure simply cannot compare

When we realize that our life has affected everyone everywhere.

So, I challenge you as I close and leave:

Think of yourself as now affecting all of eternity.

I know, you’re not famous neither me too,

But if we let this challenge go, I believe we’d all lose.

These lines are so powerful! Loved this poem!

I love what you say in this poem, but I do not like the preaching approach, which is marked by such assumptions as: "I know you feel trapped" (you know nothing about how I feel) . . . and "life should be . . . " (this way & that way, according to this narrator). YUK! We all know how to live better lives, we all know what we SHOULD be doing, & nobody likes being told how they should live. You are not persuasive in your arguments. Why not SHOW instead of tell, how a good life is lived & how good things can come from that? Show me in a vignette about how you or someone else has built a better way by whatever means . . . something specific, not over-preached generalities. Make a story come alive. Make a reader want to try your way becuz your story shows us something we find irresistible. To me, that's the way to do inspirational writing. Preachers are a dime a dozen! You've got the right ideas, but you need a more coaxing delivery (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I agree. You live in Iron River. I have Ojibwa land near Lake Superior in the U.P. No place as beautiful as the U.P. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
