21st Century LamentA Poem by Jonathan Hollebthis was inspired greatly by the Bob Dylan song "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)"...and of course, by the current state of our nation...
21st Century Lament
Standing at the floodgates Are hopeless lies, unnoticed fates Commotion for commotions sake, But where does it lead us? Propagandists pleading peace But teaching violence, as released Into the empty little streets Is all the hate they feed us
The air is rushing like a storm As the president starts to perform He takes the stage with fists of scorn As the audience stares captive Trapped inside of their correctness No one questions, no one lectures While looking at the future’s textures Noticing the tunnel is getting darker Twisted tales of backless truth Are taught like proverbs to the youth While their thoughts are boxed inside a booth, And they are taught to not think different All of this part of the scheme Tarnished time and tortured dreams The fabric ripping at the seams In which our lives are clothed Giving up or giving in Caught inside incessant spin As all that we once thought within Has been rearranged or left unspoken In the distance, imminent plight Though we blind it from each other’s sight By surrendering to the coming night Without a whimper Heroes no longer up for hire As time rides on chariots of fire The salesman tries to warn the buyer But he is used to false and faulty promise The best policies are polished clean Though most can see the dust between We sleepwalk forward through the scene And forget we were once honest Delusional states intrude upon The truth which glues the dusk to dawn And few can trust who are a pawn, When all, including the queen, Have been captured
