Eidolon

Eidolon

A Poem by Joli Dy

Shaped like a cross, you stood,
A pantomime invitation to embrace
Before God and all that is good.
Little Scarecrow Woman with a shiny face,
Your savage scarves and oblique bones,
Your lipstick, pearls, perfumed coiffure
And that smile weighed down with stones
Oh, grandmother, you cut quite the figure.
You broke my mind
Humming jaundiced lullabyes,
Rehearsing your next line.
I skipped rope on all those lies
And played dress up at your shrine.
But I am vigilant tonight,
Drawing my curtains tight
Warding off the profane
When on the wind again you ride
To etch your dust across my pane
Inciting crows to flap and fly inside.

Let them in...by all things holy and "cross-shaped" release the effing crows in! If I were to choose a line or two that broke me, and they always will do so, they would be, "Your savage scarves and oblique bones". Instantly she surpasses and becomes that human imprisoned in the corridors of what can and cannot. The rest is wonderful lipstick, ruby light, and "goat's head oil" polite when rude and rude where polite, lights up the rude, for the visuals and frames perhaps, but still without the frame who could know this woman for sure? The next," You broke my mind", it's so simple a line that puts hell in our pockets and sharp fears in our veins of what certain people can do so suddenly as certain and imprisoning us for life in their importance and experience. Now, as for the "flapping", well I had to laugh at the terror. Always stunned and a welcome embrace you've become to this little family of fools..haha!

it reminds me a bit about Edgar Allan Poe. the gothic imagery and the morbid atmosphere evokes that sense of unease and dread. yet it also seems quite biographical, the persona feels vulnerable and trapped. prayer being the final thing we turn to when desperate, she draws the curtains tight. it was an atmospheric and eerie work. the horror-lover in me dances around to this verse.
