"Raze #3: I Got Your Nose"A Story by Jack BucknerThe Raze Series Continues“Raze #3: Got Your Nose” By John Smith
1. Raze walked into the office and glanced over at his partner, Ernie. He pushed his dark sunglasses up to his forehead and placed a stack of newspapers on the table beside the office door. “Any calls Ernie?” Raze asked as he took the sunglasses from his forehead and clipped them to the neck of his shirt. Ernie, with powdered doughnuts stuffed in his face, nodded and scrabbled through the dozens of sticky notes on his unorganized desk. Ernie swallowed the doughnuts hard and let out a painful gasp for breathe. “Easy there Ernie. You don’t want to get chocked!” Raze said as he walked over to Ernie’s desk. Ernie handed him a red sticky note with a phone number scribbled on it in pencil. 476-548-9912 the note read. “I don’t know who it was. When I answered the phone there was nobody on the other line. I copied the note down because I figured it might help in the current case.” Ernie said. “Yeah, I bet it will. Thanks!” Raze told him. Ernie looked over and pointed at the stack of ten newspapers on the table across from him. “What are the papers for?” Ernie asked. Raze looked over at them and then looked back at Ernie. “I brought them for Amy. There’s a picture on the front page of the people who were at the scene of the crime. I figured I could give her picture and she could around town and see what the people knew. See if anyone say who was in the phone booth.” Raze said. He walked over to his office door and then turned back to face Ernie. “Speaking of Amy, she hadn’t been in yet has she?” He asked him. Ernie shook his head. Raze rolled his eyes and turned his back to him. “Let me know when she does!” Raze said as he walked into his office and shut the door behind him. Amy was his assistant he had hired just two weeks before he first found the proposal.
2. Raze took off his coat and detective’s hat and hung them on the coat rack beside his door. He walked over to his desk and glanced out of the window before sitting down. Raze taped the space bar twice to wake up his computer and typed in his user password, password, and clicked on the Internet Explorer icon at the base of the screen. ‘Maybe the son of a b***h had emailed me since last night.’ Raze thought to him as he wends to his email in box. There were no new messages as he had hoped. He sat back in his computer chair and sighed. ‘Come on you b*****d! Where are you?’ He asked himself. Raze sat there for a moment and stared at the post it note with the phone number on it. He sat there for a moment more before the black telephone sitting on his desk began to ring. Raze sat up to glance at the caller ID screen to see if it was the same number. It wasn’t. But it wasn’t a number he recognized either. Raze slowly reached for the phone. ‘Is it you you son of a b***h?’ He mumbled under his breath before he picked up the phone and answered it. “Raze Detective Agency, Raze speaking.” He said as he answered the phone. “Raze? I need you to come down to the store! There’s something you might want to check out!” Marty, a mechanic at the local auto shop said with a sickening sound in his voice. “What? What is it?” He asked. “You just need to come here and see for yourself! It’s pretty nasty!” Marty said. Raze reached up and rubbed his forehead. “Okay. We’ll be down there in a second.” Raze said as he hung up the phone. He grabbed the sticky note with the phone number on it and stuck it to his right index finger. Raze stood from his desk and walked over to the door to grab his coat and hat and walked out of his office.
3. Amy walked into the office and over to Ernie’s desk. She had long beautiful blonde hair and a big round pair of sunglasses that covered her baby blue eyes. She was wearing a white button up blouse that just buttoned up enough to hide what needed to be hid without covering it all up. She was also wearing a short gray skirt to show off her legs and a pair of black high hills. “You’re late.” Ernie said as he licked the powdered sugar from his fingers. Amy looked over at him annoyed and lifted the sunglasses from her face onto her forehead. “Bite me loser! Does Raze know?” Amy asked as she walked over to Ernie’s desk and sat down at the chair in front of it. “Yes Raze knows!” Raze said as he walked out of the office and over to Amy. "And Amy better get her act together or Raze will fire Amy!” He continued to mock her. Raze handed her the sticky note with the phone number on it. “I want you to look up this phone number and find out who’s it is. I think that it might belong to man who killed my mom.” He told her as he slipped on his coat and hat. “And I want you to grab one of those newspapers and pay a visit to everyone you can see in the photo on the front page. Somebody had to see something!” Raze continued. He looked over at Ernie and motioned towards the door. “Come on! We got a call from Marty at the auto shop. Apparently something gruesome went down there!” He told him. Ernie nodded and stood up. The two of the walked over to the door and Raze turned back to face Amy. “I’m serious Amy! I hired you because you’re my wife’s sister. Don’t f**k it up or I will have to fire your a*s!” He told her as he walked out of the door and shut it.
4. Raze and Ernie drove into the parking of Bob’s Auto and put the Mercedes into park. The two of them stepped out of the car and walked over Marty who was standing next to the garage door biting his right thumb nail. “Hey Marty! What was so important?” Raze asked. Marty wasn’t he. He seemed jittery instead of being calm friendly guy they had grown to know. “It’s Bob!” He said. He turned to them walked into the shop over to Bob’s office. Bob was the owner of the auto shop and Marty’s boss. Raze and Ernie followed and Marty opened the office door. He pointed for them to go in. “I can’t go in there. Not again man!” He pointed. Raze placed his hand on Marty’s shoulder. “It’s okay man. You don’t have to. Marty, let’s go!” Raze said as he led his partner into the office. Ernie covered his nose at the nauseating smell from in the room. On the ground beside a bookshelf was a lump under a blood stained sheet. Raze slowly walked over and lifted the sheet. Under the sheet was a lifeless Bob. His skin was pale and there was a big crater where his nose had once been. On the side of the wall written in book it read In The Top Drawer! Ernie slowly walked over to the desk and opened the top drawer. He leaped back and shouted at the sight of Bob’s cut off nose in the drawer with a blue note reading:
I GOT YOUR NOSE! HAHAHA! I TOLD YOU IT WAS GAME ON DETECTIVE RAZE!
“I’m going to get that son of a b***h!” Raze said as he clenched his fists.
