Personal MythologyA Story by JohnA very short story about a reimagining of popular myths and culture.
In the beginning, one primordial man walked and breathed in the heat of young sun, Chronos, and from this point on, the concept of time ticked evermore.
From here, Chronos wedded Infinity, and had a child, Life. Chronos did what he felt had to be done, and felt that the barren skies and plains were alone without the joy of his child's warmth and laughter, so he ripped the soul from Life and split it into countless parts, scattering it throughout the air, sea, and land. From this, many different creatures graced the Earth, and the child of Life lived in all of them. Chronos buried his child's body in the ethereal fields that he called Elysium, and from this, a great crop of beautiful golden wheat was yielded. Chronos fashioned the first farmer's tool, a scythe, and engaged in the first harvest. In memory of his first child, he fashioned a pendant from first cut wheat, and displayed it proudly on his chest evermore. Infinity saw what Chronos had done with their first child and left for areas unknown, expanding the plane of reality where ever she walked. Chronos eventually found love again and wedded Perception, and from this, two children were born, Zeus, and Athena. From Zeus, the skies were filled with furious wrath and vigor, and this vigor enabled the creatures of the Earth to grow stronger, and multiply evermore, and the concepts of jealousy, protection, rage, hatred, ego, strength, and instinct were born. From Athena, she gave the gift that all creatures could now percieve the world around them and remember what they have seen as the gods could, they now had a sense of self and the ability to think for one's self. From her, emotions were born, as was wisdom, love, passion, romance, tactics, rebellion, sacrifice, science, and worship. The two did not wish to live in Elysium, disagreeing with their father on many things, and so went to live on a mountain stretching high above the clouds, Mount Olympus, and established the heavens. Chronos was not yet satisfied, however, nor was his lust. He went on to abandon Perception and wed Chaos, and his strongest and most prized son was born, Death. Chronos saw that the creatures of the Earth were growing uncontrollable and would soon cover the Earth with no room to spare, and Athena saw and bargained with her father to do something, as soon, there would be no room for great works of art and wisdom. Seeing this, Chronos took his harvesting scythe, and taught his son Death how to take and reap life just as he had with his first child, and bestowed his scythe upon Death. From here, Death roamed the lands, and nothing could escape the mighty reaper, and creatures soon begin to die, and a balance was born on Earth, where Death would reap the souls of men and beasts so that the land would remain wide and lively, and new ones would be born for the rest of time so that Life's spirit would continue. With this balance, the living no longer stayed young, beautiful, and in their prime forever, all manner of men, women, fauna, and beasts were now born with a faint, delicate spark, a seed of sorts that had to be protected by the strong, and eventually grew beautiful and strong themselves, but this beauty and strength would always eventually fade until their spark grew faint again, and was ready for the taking by Death, waiting to be returned to the land. © 2022 John |
