![]() This too shall pass.A Poem by John Cuttito
I have known these tears.
I have felt this way.
I have loved.
I have experienced.
I have known death.
I have known new life.
I know that life works in cycles.
I know there are infinite possibilities.
Show me the branch that does not sway in the wind and I will show you a broken branch. I believe in change. I believe in love. I believe in the power of laughter. I believe that all change should come from within. I believe in you. I believe in the infinite. I believe in happy endings. I believe that all change comes with a price but that ultimately it will make you believe that it is necessary that all things change. I believe in patience. I believe in something bigger than myself.
Always this.. or that.
All-ways go that direction.
All things happen this
Way and never return
Always is, forever is
A long long time
To keep your hand in mine
Your kiss on these lips
Because I believe in forever
Always is never long enough.
“Do you believe in coincidences?”, she had asked one night as they lay upon the sand.
“I don’t believe that anything happens without a reason”, he yelled his answer to the stars.
“I don’t believe you”, she said her eyes focused on the rolling waters before us. “If nothing happens without a reason then tell me what my reason for not being here is.”
“I can’t tell you your reason, only my own. But we are part of the same universe, a universe that is at work tirelessly expanding its horizons and constantly reshaping the definitions of its borders. At the same time that the universe expands scientists believe that there exists at the exact center of the universe a black hole which is simultaneously pulling everything back into itself. People are like this too, expanding their belief in what they are capable of but also shrinking back into themselves all as a part of a cycle that is no more unnatural than what occurs in the deepest of space from which all of existence came into being. I believe the universe works to draw us together and it is for that reason you are here.”
“You believe the universe conspires with you?” She pours the sand from her sneakers and getting up starts to walk away.
“I believe that we shape our own worlds and can impact every single effect we have on that world. Don’t leave again.” He stares after her knowing that this too should happen. “I love you regardless of what the universe says!”
She stops and slowly turns around. “Then what does your universe say about love?”
He looks at her, taking in her beauty as if for the last time. In the moonlight he can see she is crying, and he wishes she weren’t. He wants her to see that everything that happens is an important part of the struggle of life, but if it weren’t for the struggle life would be pointless.
“In my universe there is room for love that exists forever. Love that is older than stars, and bigger than anything that ever existed before or will. Love that comes from out of nowhere but does not disappear. My universe if it knows nothing else knows love and that each different love that occupies a piece of that universe will leave behind its impression. If love left nothing behind then we would never be able to know what future love looked like. But my universe is usually more concerned with happiness, because without happiness love would be empty. If happiness does not exist within love then the universe will conspire to bring one happiness if that is what one truly desires.”
“Where is there room for me in this universe?” She hesitates and he is suddenly unsure if she will leave after all.
“Everywhere”, the words do not come easily but rather as the culmination of his experience with depths of time and change. He can barely contain himself from crying these days, not knowing what the future brings. But he thinks that the paths that brought him here are no different than the ones she travels as well, and that he sees so much in her that he cannot bear to leave behind. “When I knew you there was no part of my world that was not filled with you and even after you were gone there was no day that was not filled with you, as far as I am concerned you are still there regardless of where you were. And even if you do not come back there will always be some of you with me.”
“How do I find this universe?’ She doesn’t want to go, maybe as much as he doesn’t want her to.
“You are already there, you just have to stop closing your eyes. When you open them you will see that no path is without choices but that all of the choices eventually intersect. This is the beauty that is life, and I would love to be the one to show it to you. I will never be able to guarantee that the world will not change but I can promise to change along with it for you. I will not make your choices but ask that you make them for yourself, if they bring you to me then it will be” Having said this he walked towards the waters shifting edge and throwing himself into its depths he floated off, as she walked away.
