Swallow the StarsA Poem by John Cuttito
Illumination
A spark of this.
She lights the room
To watch me leave.
Waiting for something
that won’t shiver in the night
and go cold. Moonlit lullaby
somewhere between earth and sky.
Starlight. The song of darkness.
She sings sweet sounds, serenades silence.
Seas swell, shift of seasons, shallow sights
shattered by shoreline sirens sinful screech.
Scattered swift and swept. Silent struggle.
Call down the moon,
This pearl in your hand.
Break the tide apart,
This quaking of the heart.
Why not love this soil prison.
Stuck dirt on loose collars. This was
Always black and white. Moonless
Sky this palmed perfection.
Bleed this heart dry.
Soothe a shadow-souls secret sting.
This sizzled skin still strong
She sends succor in substitution of self.
Re-creation of unrealities
Suffer this too to pass.
The burden of the mountain is
That it will not die and so
Can only watch. The door that
Does not budge should not be opened.
Possibility of affection, to avoid
Inspection this slight shift of perception
Will be deemed necessary.
