I am a PoetA Poem by John HocherI am a Poet When I was a kid I was chubby, weird, and if I’m being honest pretty awkward. And my mind would run so fast it would trip up my tongue, But I’ve made peace with that. One thing you might not know about me is, I love poetry. One day in English class I wrote a poem I was really proud of. I was using metaphors that could tear up floor boards and dominate scoreboards. I was rhyming and repeating, and asking rhetorical questions. I was making personifications, alliterations, allusions, and imagery. So I shared it with my friends, but the guys next to me looked at me and said “Look at this cracker, thinking he’s a rapper”. Now I have two problems with this. Number One: A cracker is a thin crispy wafer usually eaten with cheese or other savory toppings. I know that I’m really white but just because I have a vampire complexion, It does not mean I don’t have a reflection. I see it everyday, and the color of my skin, or lack of it, won’t go away. Number Two: I do not think I am a rapper. Rappers spit rhymes, I proclaim them with purpose I am not a rapper. Rappers talk trash and bash others for cold cash. I am not a rapper. Rappers set others up for failure, like trappers hunting innocent animals for Fur coats and golden chains. I am not a rapper. I can tell you all day what I am not, but I’d rather tell you who I am. This is who I am, and I am a poet. By: John Hocher © 2018 John HocherReviews
