Charade

Charade

A Poem by Joey Martinez

It was all just a charade, a game I foolishly volunteered to play
No matter how many times I guessed, I couldn’t address who she claimed to be
Another lover who wore the mask of an enemy
And just like a jester, I kept the act going along unaware I was being used as a prompt for the show
She killed my hopeful doves and unleashed the sorrowful crows
I can’t believe I’ve been bamboozled by such a simple act
What makes it worse is that I’d love to come back
Sometimes the pain can be a bit pleasurable
My time was wasted but I enjoyed it so much it almost measurable
I enjoyed every second I’ve spent with you
Even though you took Cupid’s arrow, poisoned the tip and pierced it right through my heart
Only fools like me claim to be numb but feel every bit of pain ripping themselves apart
Perhaps next time I’ll avoid the temptation of volunteering
I’ll stay shut instead of foolishly cheering
But this is my mind of misery talking not the heart of chance
Why is it so hard to turn down the devils dance?
