Paterson

A Poem by Joey Martinez

The aroma of fear is scented all around
Murder, drugs, and gangs flood the town
If you don't take part in it, you'll be sure to drown
Walk on the wrong street and you'll never be found
Watch your back, be alert
Don't be scared to run and divert
Because these creatures don't dare to think twice
They'll crack a smile while taking one's life
The residents here torment the weak
Put a bullet in your head and watch the blood leak
No matter if its day or night
Violence has no curfew no matter how dark or light
Police question but people lie
Murderers laugh while families cry
You're no one here in this town of fear
A place where rain doesn't flood as much as the tears
Welcome to Paterson
Where dreams die and nightmares live
