At The Edge

At The Edge

A Poem by Joey Martinez

She sits on the edge looking down
Contemplating whether to hit the ground
A troubled youth going through enormous pain
Flooding the city with her tears of rain
She gave it her all
But she's ready to fall
Life has been too hard for her to deal
So much pain has been dealt she can barely feel
Throughout her life she always wanted to wear a smile
Hoping the wheel of fortune would land on its dial
But sadness and pain seem to come up within each spin
A long time player with numerous losses and 0 wins
And just when shes about to fall
A young man sits besides her and answers her call
He to was thinking about falling to his death
When along came a stranger to save him from his last breath
He grabs the girl and pulls her towards himself
Telling her not to throw away life's wealth
Convincing her that it gets better within time
Promising her that all will be fine
He gently strokes her hair
Whispers "I to was there"
"Looking at the heart of death's stare"
"I know it may seem as if no one cares"
"And I agree life can be unfair"
"But don't jump because I see something rare"
"You're a diamond in the rough"
"I know you've had enough
"But fight through it, get tough!"
She looks into his eyes
Blue as the night sky
And says
"Its too late"
"I've made up my mind"
"You're the third person to tell me its gonna be fine"
"I'm sorry but its time"
She lays a kiss on his cheek and hugs his chest
Cracking a smile before she falls to her death

I really love this. Especially the twist at the end "Cracking a smile before she falls to her death." Sometimes people are depressed and they are ready to die. The boy thinking he can save her seems naive at the end, which is realistic since it's almost impossible to change people.
