A Strong Mother

A Strong Mother

A Poem by Joey Martinez

It started out as a normal night
I was with my kids, all was right
We were watching a movie enjoying ourselves
Unaware this night was going to hell
They were falling asleep so I tucked them to bed
And gave them a kiss goodnight on each of there heads
I proceeded to the kitchen to grab a late night snack
I put the stove on and made myself soup that I found from the shack
As I wait for the soup to be done
Someone breaks into my house and I quickly run
I run to the my room, grab my children and hide
I must do all that I can to make sure my children don't die
They begin to panic and start to cry
But I cover their mouths and tell them all is going to be fine
I hear the criminal's footsteps, he's still far from where we lie
I quickly grab my phone, call 911 and yell COME QUICK WE'RE GOING TO DIE!
They trace the call and say they're on the way
Hearing that made me more confident about seeing another day
The criminal starts breaking everything in sight
I hope he doesn't find us before the cops come and fight
But the worst is about to come, I hear footsteps coming up the stairs
I tell my children to turn around so they don't make eye contact and glare
He reaches the top floor and begins to search for us
To protect my children from danger is a must
The cops still have not shown up so I begin to worry just a bit
Because if he finds us, I'm scared to say that this is it
He enters the room and breaks everything in sight
My children panic but again I tell them, its gonna be alright
He searches around, trying to find where we reside
But so far it looks like he has no idea where we hide
But painfully, I was wrong, he grabbed my leg and dragged me out
I hit him, punched him, kicked him, while I screamed and shout
He was not fazed by my hits, he grabbed me and threw me to the ground
I made eye contact with my kids and told them to stay silent and turn around
He started to beat me until I couldn't move no more
I was stuck, covered in blood lying on the floor
As I was going unconscious I heard the sirens outside my home
A bit of relief hit me knowing my kids weren't going to be alone
But the worst became even more worse, he grabbed me and used me as a shield
He wen't outside my home and said "If you come anywhere near me I'll beat her until she can't feel"
Nearing the point of blacking out I thought I was going to die
But thats when I saw a bullet come right pass my eye
It hit the criminal dead on his head
I fell to the ground with him, but the only difference was
I was alive and he was dead
The cops rushed to me and quickly called an ambulance
As they knew I couldn't get up and hold myself in a stance
My kids ran to my arms and gave me such a bolt of heavenly light
Before I went away I told them all was going to be alright
