Through The Fire

Through The Fire

A Poem by Joey Martinez
"

In honor of the brave firemen of 9/11

"
Woke up early in the morning and did the same usual routine
Had myself a bacon and egg sandwich with coffee and cream
In my head, today is looking like another normal day
Put on my gear, head to the station, make sure everything is okay
I arrive at the station, punch in, and converse with my fellow firemen
Just killing time until we get a call or something comes up, but until then
I just stick to my script of conversing and killing time
So far today looks easy, everything seems fine
I go outside for a smoke on this beautiful morning
And within one puff, all hell breaks loose without warning
A plane has struck the world trade center, I can't believe my eyes
At first I couldn't believe it, I had to pinch myself to make sure I was alive
Panic and cries surrounded the whole town
This beautiful morning has just been flipped outside down
Within seconds after the crash the news had come to report America is under attack
I immediately run inside, and grab my oxygen tank from the rack
The chief tells every single one of us to rush to the world trade center and help
But what we all saw next, man I wish that was something I never felt
Another plane rides low and makes impact
The world trade center had just suffered another attack
Every single one of us looks up and cries
Knowing a lot of innocent people are about to die
We start to move out and head there as fast as we can
Our mission right now is to rescue every single woman, child, and man
My fellow firemen and I arrive at the scene and it looks like hell on earth
People crying, people dying, I promise you haven't seen anything worse
I enter the building and run through the large hectic crowd
I yell, "Leave as fast as you can and keep your heads down!"
I locate the nearest staircase and start making my way towards the top
I know I can't save everyone or make the pain stop
But I can do my best to help save a few lives, heck, maybe even a lot
I run up the stairs as fast as I can
Making my way through the crowd thats running downwards so I can lend a helping hand
I know I'm getting close because I can feel the heat rise within each step
But I can't let that phase me, I can't break the promise I have kept
I promised myself I would help anyone in need
Even if it means putting my life at risk, I will be there to help and lead
I make my way up to the floor where the impact took place
Everyone's dead, but I see a little girls frantic face
I grab her and tell her everything is gonna be okay
I told her she'll make it out alive and live to see another day
I take off my oxygen mask and place it on her face
So she can breath better as we rush to make our escape
The smoke is killing me, I'm losing my breath
But I must be strong, I don't want this girl to experience death just yet
I run as fast as I can until a strong rumble shakes me off my feet
As I look up, all I see is tumbling pieces of concrete
I get back up, give the girl my hardhat and run like the wind
I look back at the girl, smile and wipe away the tears before it reaches her chin
Looks like we're gonna make it, all is looking well
Until I get a call from my chief telling me one of the towers has fell
I can't believe the whole building collapsed to the ground
A thousand lives lost within the speed of sound
I must run faster so this girl can be safe and alive
Even if it means I lose it all and die
A few more levels down and I'll make it to the lobby
I got this, I will get her to safe ground, nothing can stop me
Then the worst news that can ever happen plays over my phone
'The second tower is currently collapsing, GET OUT AS FAST AS YOU CAN JONES"
I put it on full gear and make my way down
I will get this girl into hectic free territory safe and sound
With all my might and strength we make it to the lobby and run outside
I hand her over to a fellow fireman and I head back in to save more lives
"WHAT THE F**K ARE YOU DOING ARE YOU CRAZY? YOU'LL DIE!"
I knew what I signed up for, my job is to save lives
I see the tower collapsing but head in anyway
Looking to see who I can save so they can see another day
Out of breath I collapse on the floor
This is it, I can't do no more
Eyes closed shut, heart beating slow
This is my final act, life was one hell of a show
I saved that girls life, but not because it was my job, because I wanted to
Mom, dad, and my beautiful wife Rebecca, I love you
