There's something in my throatA Poem by Jo ToddThere is something in my throat, coating my airways it trickles drip drip drip down into my
lungs they are filled with it drowning in it my body wants it out pushes everything from me till there is nothing left in my
lungs but these empty screams I fight it, clench shut my teeth grind down jaws aching chew
and chew till it is a leaden mass on my tongue choking it back it sits, a stinking seeping lump in my
throat drip drip dripping into my lungs But you, you embrace it, you weaponise it you tug it close head cocked to better hear its whispers you treat it as a gift A family heirloom passed down from Father to son, mother to daughter its use your right alone you spit the fires on your tongue as I dowse the coals on
mine your acid words punch fists into my mouth Gouge obscenities from my tongue, words dragged bucking and
screaming from the shadowed parts of me these fractured sentences torn to shreds on the corners of
broken logic you strive to stifle my words, gnashing teeth around
spittled breaths tendons snapping tight around my neck my words halted in my lungs you lost to the storm in your eyes on calmer days you will lay the blame on your forefathers some quirk of your genes a frenetic twist in your DNA inherited not learnt, not taught, not a choice clouded by your self imposed illusion you thrash at the
reigns of a self made master time to walk away sunny boy, listen to the voice of wisdom and choose © 2014 Jo ToddReviews
