CeruleanA Poem by Joel ArmstrongAs I sit on these rigid rocks That mark the boundary Between land and sea, A narrow strip of rock, Of man's attempt to keep The relentless sea at bay, I can't help but wonder Of man's futile effort to keep The two lovers apart. With man embracing the role Of an austere guardian To keep two bessoted lovers asunder. The birds of the sea, The emissaries to his lady love Pass on the clandestine epistles To and fro. The sea unrelenting in his quest To reach his beloved swain Beats down upon those adamantine rocks With every ripple, Slowly degrading them Into mere grains of sand. And day by day, Week by week, Millennia by millennia, He comes closer to his queen. And yet man adds rock by rock To expand their divide. And so he continues His relentless beats , Upon those accursed rocks For yet another eternity. The world a mere spectator In this tragic tale, À la Odesseus and Penelope And of eternal hope.
