A Lost Mind
Joe Feely The man woke up in complete darkness. He could not make out any depth of his surrounding area, but he could feel his eyes open. He could wave his hand in front of him and make out a very vague and dark figure, but he could not see anything else. Everything was silent and he couldn’t remember anything. There were things in his head he could not make sense of. The word “truck” popped up in his mind but he could not make sense of it. At first he thought that he was a truck. The more he thought about what it was, the more nonsensical and meaningless it became. He said truck to himself and even though he whispered it, it amplified in the darkness, making an echo that repeated several times before it faded. He spoke other words that were in his head like child, toy and dog, but It held no more significance than a grunt or scream. It just became noise to him. Nothing made sense. The man felt himself. He had fingers, a face, a torso, two legs, arms and a head. He could function completely fine, but he had no idea who he was or where he was. He started walking in front of him. He continued to walk for what seemed like hours, but could of probably been just minutes. There seemed to be no time in the dark world. He kept on walking until he heard noise. It was people talking, it echoed throughout the whole open space. “Yep, that’s him. He’s specimen 124. Hopefully he’ll be the successful one”. The man grew scared and began to run, not knowing where he was running to. The voices returned. “I just wish I could be there to see him in the flesh. It wont be until another five hundred years until he’ll be ready.” The man could not make sense of any of the words. To him it was just a noise. A noise that frightened him. Another voice of a different tone started to speak, “So who was he?” The original voice responded, “His name was Steven Bailer...” The voice started to fade until it was gone. The man began to think about the noise the voice said. “Steven Bailer” for some reason was a very familiar sound. The man felt himself again. He began to feel his face. He painted a picture in his mind of what he looked like. When he saw that image he thought of the sound “Steven Bailer”. The man was Steven Bailer. The man decided to take a long time to think about his identity. It could of been years or maybe even seconds that he was thinking about “Steven Bailer”. As he thought about it he could pull out new sounds that made since to him. There were sounds like Maria, Thomas, Christopher and a certain sound that he grew quite fond of, Sydney Bailer. There was this one sound that really scared the man. It was the sound “war”. We he thought about that sound he heard other sounds like “What are you doing?!” “Get out of there!” “Watch your back!”. Then there would be loud thunderous and cracking sounds and he could hear his own voice screaming. Suddenly all of his thoughts started coming together. His mind’s sounds and noises started to make sense. They started to become words, which became sentences and then thoughts of images and feelings. He could remember things again. The expanse darkness started to burst into light and then suddenly he was in a pristine white room. There were four people in white suits. They all started clapping as the man woke up. The man felt his head, there were stitches around his skull. One of the doctors began to speak, “Steven Bailer killed in action in 1943 joins us here today in the year 2434! Welcome, Steven, to the future.” © 2012 Joe Feely |
