The Fight Within

The Fight Within

A Poem by Jeremy Litton
"

We all struggle on the inside. We feel dead. cold and alone. Dark and light are always waging war on our hearts, but we have to choose which to follow.

"

Darkness is ever pressing

Surrounding me on all sides

The jagged walls inch closer as I walk

The drooping ceiling forces down from above

A chill races across the rock

It seeps into the heart, into the soul

A shiver runs along my back

All there is, is darkness and cold

Droplets of water splash down

Crashing unto my head

My breath is rugged

My heart is pounding

This cannot be all there is

Darkness, cold, fear

Where one exists

The opposite must as well

Cry out; cry out for light

Darkness is merely the absence of light

So there must be light

We need to just cry out, then listen

There is a Light

I feel it deep in my cold heart

But to have the Light

I must obey it, follow it

I must submit to it

It wants to know me

And I must want to know it

I must love this Light

I know it will guide me deeper

Deeper into the maze

Deeper into the cold and harshness

But if I have Light, what can I fear?

I close my eyes

My mind and heart are made

The chill stops, the cold gone

My heart swells with warmth

My eyes open, I can see

But only a few feet in front

There is still a forbidding darkness

I cannot know what it hides

Where is my Light?

Why is everything not clear?

Confusion and fear set it

The cold begins to creep again…

“I am here, here in your heart I stay

I will guide you from here

Even though darkness is in front

And things are unclear

I will lead you forward

Have faith in My Light

I will never lead you astray

But the journey will not be easy

With me here, darkness will press away

Darkness will seem to have won

But I tell you, Light always prevails

Keep me here, and you will prevail

My path for you is hard

My path is mysterious

But My path will lead you

To places you never thought before

To see glorious things

And when you stumble

For indeed you will stumble

I am here to help you recover

So My son, trust in my path

Let us walk together

You loving and trusting me

And I in your heart

Loving you more than you can see

Fighting off the dark

Destroying the cold

And giving you Light through it all.”

I really love this, the message is wonderful. Darkness always wants to try and creep in but with God, the light pushes the darkness away. I have a few suggestions that you may consider, when you say "Confusion and fear set it," I think it would sound better if you put "Confusion and fear set in" or perhaps that's what you meant. Another one is changing one of the stanzas up a little bit to help it sound smoother. You say "With me here, darkness will press away, Darkness will seem to have won, But I tell you, Light always prevails, Keep me here, and you will prevail" I think I would look into changing some of the wording and the order to something similar to "Darkness will seem to have won, But I tell you, Light always prevails, With me here, darkness will flea, Keep me beside you, and you will prevail" but this is just a suggestion, you can change the order and wording to the way you like it, I just think that "press away" should be changed because usually pressing means pressing inward, at least that's how I see it. Oh and when I got to the second to last stanza I kinda stumbled along the reading "You loving and trusting me, And I in your heart." Maybe say something like "Love and trust me, And I will be in your heart." Other than that you did an excellent job, I really enjoyed reading this, keep writing these uplifting poems.
