Untainted

Untainted

A Poem by Jenna

“Kids think with their brains cracked wide open; becoming an adult, I've decided, is only a slow sewing shut.” -Jodi Picoult

Untainted

little girl.

Fabricating stories on the playground.

Mind unfurled, unburdened.

Letting the thoughts flow out,

unimpeded by reality or harsh commentary.

Her mind is wide open embracing the impossibility of

a princess

a dragon

a warrior.

Untainted

little girl

Chasing after her once upon a time

Believing happily ever after is achievable.

Mind cracked open

Harsh words only providing a temporary glue

to keep it shut. But it opens again.

Realism tries to seal it up.

It opens again.

Tainted

girl.

Mind sewn shut by reality by years of experience

by accepting that the impossible is just that, impossible.

Mind stitched closed

obstructing the leakage of imagination

or shot down dreams or unachievable aspirations.

Don’t fantasize.

Don’t hope.

Don’t dream.

Innocence

unreachable innocence.

Lost to her long ago.

When a sharp needle fastened her brain closed

and told her to grow up. Do as she was told.

A sharp needle sewed her and stuffed her

and propped her up until she was nothing.

Nothing more. Just a

tainted

girl.
